Can You Use Komoot Offline? Maps, Routes and Limits

Yes, you can use Komoot offline—but you must download the route or map in the mobile app before you lose internet access. A downloaded route can display its map and provide GPS-based navigation without cellular service. Automatic rerouting and other features that calculate or fetch new information may still require a stable connection.

Komoot also requires navigation access for the relevant region. New users can unlock one single region free; purchased Map regions, the World Pack, or Premium determine what broader offline map access is available. The exact screen wording may vary by app version, but Komoot’s current support flow is Profile → Saved routes → choose a route → Download or Save offline.

Komoot offline: the short answer

Task Works without cell service? What you must do first
Follow a saved route Yes Unlock the relevant access and download the route in the app
See the map along that route Yes Wait for the offline download to finish
Receive turn-by-turn or voice instructions Yes, on a correctly downloaded and unlocked route Enable navigation and download before departure
Automatically calculate a new route after going off course Not reliably Komoot says Auto Replan requires a stable internet connection
Download a route or region No Download through the mobile app while connected
Plan an entirely new route Do not depend on it offline Plan and save alternatives before leaving coverage

The phone’s GPS receiver does not require a cellular connection to determine position. The missing piece in a dead zone is usually map and route data, which is why the download must already be stored on the device.

How to download a Komoot route for offline use

  1. Plan or save the route while you have Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  2. Open the Komoot mobile app. Offline downloads are not provided through the website.
  3. Go to your profile and open Saved routes or Planned Tours, depending on the app version.
  4. Select the route.
  5. Tap Download, Save offline, or the equivalent offline control.
  6. Keep the app open and connected until the download is marked complete.
  7. Put the phone in airplane mode and open the route again as a test.

These steps follow Komoot’s current official offline download instructions. A route shown in your account is not necessarily stored on the phone merely because you planned or favorited it. Confirm the offline indicator before leaving.

Do you need Komoot Premium for offline maps?

Not necessarily. Komoot separates its one-time Maps products from the Premium subscription. Its current documentation says Maps can provide voice navigation, offline functionality and GPX download for unlocked regions. Premium includes worldwide maps and navigation plus additional features.

Komoot also offers a first single region free for new users. A single-region or region-bundle purchase covers the purchased area; the World Pack unlocks maps worldwide as a one-time purchase; Premium includes worldwide access while the subscription remains active. Check Komoot’s current Maps-versus-Premium comparison before paying because pricing and packaging can change.

Planning is available beyond an unlocked region, but navigation access depends on the region around the route’s starting point. If a saved route will not download or start navigation, check the region access shown in the app.

Route download versus whole-region download

Download a route when:

  • you know the exact course;
  • you want to minimize storage use;
  • the trip crosses multiple regions;
  • you only need map detail along the planned line.

Download a region when:

  • you expect to explore outside one planned corridor;
  • you want broader offline orientation;
  • you may record an unplanned activity;
  • your access level includes that regional map.

Komoot says route and region downloads are available only in the app. Under Profile → Maps, downloadable regions appear according to the regions, World Pack or Premium access on the account. Some countries or regions may have download limitations; in that situation, Komoot recommends planning and downloading a route through the area so its necessary map data is available.

What stops working when Komoot is offline?

A downloaded tour preserves the core route-following experience, but offline does not make every connected feature local. Komoot specifically states that automatic replanning after leaving a route requires stable internet. Directions from your current location to a distant route start may also depend on a separate mapping app and data connection.

Do not assume you can search for a new destination, build a detour around a closure, fetch current weather, share live location, or synchronize a newly changed route while offline. Plan critical alternatives in advance and carry an independent backup for remote travel.

Test Komoot before an off-grid ride

  1. Download the exact final route. If you edit it later, confirm the updated version is downloaded.
  2. Check free storage. Large routes and regional maps can require significant space.
  3. Enable required permissions. Komoot needs location access for navigation; operating-system battery restrictions can affect background guidance.
  4. Switch to airplane mode at home. Open the route, zoom the map and start navigation briefly.
  5. Verify the route start. Know how you will reach it if connected directions are unavailable.
  6. Carry power. Screen use, GPS and cold temperatures can drain a phone faster than expected.
  7. Carry a backup. Export the GPX to a compatible device, save a second offline map, or carry a paper overview with bailout points.

Airplane mode is the simplest realistic check because it reveals whether the map tiles and route are truly on the phone. If the route line appears but the surrounding map is blank, reconnect and repeat the download.

Can Komoot reroute you offline?

Do not rely on it. GPS can continue showing your location relative to the downloaded line, but Komoot’s current navigation documentation says Auto Replan needs a stable internet connection. If you miss a turn in a dead zone, the safe options are to return to the known route when conditions allow or use a separately downloaded map and your own judgment.

Never follow a navigation prompt into a closed trail, private property, hazardous crossing or terrain beyond your ability. Local signs, closures and conditions take priority over an app route.

Komoot versus Ride with GPS for offline use

Both can provide offline maps and saved-route navigation, but the access models and workflows differ. Ride with GPS’s current offline-map documentation says Basic or Premium membership is required to download Offline Maps and Offline Routes. A downloaded Offline Map makes saved routes within that map area available offline, but route planning itself still requires internet.

Komoot uses unlocked map regions or Premium access and permits downloading an individual saved route. Choose based on the routes and devices you already use, the offline area required, export or synchronization needs, and the current plan features—not on an old app comparison or a one-time battery anecdote.

What about Gaia GPS?

Gaia GPS is oriented toward layered backcountry maps and is relevant when topographic detail matters beyond a cycling route line. Its subscription requirements and map-layer permissions can differ from Komoot’s region model. If you use Gaia, download the exact map layers and route area in advance and test them offline; seeing a layer while connected does not prove it was saved locally.

For many bikepacking trips, the best setup is not “one winning app.” It is one primary navigation method plus an independent backup that does not share the same failure point.

Offline navigation checklist

  • Final route saved and downloaded
  • Required region unlocked
  • Offline map visible in airplane mode
  • Location permission enabled
  • Phone and power bank charged
  • Charging cable protected from weather
  • Bailout points and water sources noted
  • GPX, second device or paper backup available
  • Someone else knows the route and return plan

Bottom line

You can navigate with Komoot without cell service if the relevant route or map is downloaded in the mobile app and the region is unlocked. Download it before departure, test it in airplane mode and do not expect automatic rerouting or new online information in a dead zone. For remote rides, pair the downloaded route with power and an independent navigation backup.
